Listening A
A: Well, the shareholders are pretty angry, but we need to explain that the product launch was delayed primarily because of the blackout, not human error.
B: Should we explain the reason for the blackout?
A: Not at the start. We need to start the meeting in a positive way. We'll only get into the reason for the problem after we've assured everyone that we can reschedule the launch for next month.
B: Okay, but you should probably handle that part.

Listening B
A: This bridge closure affected a lot of people. I think we need to be very clear on how we're going to handle the question and answer session.
B: I don't mind fielding questions. I am the chief engineer after all.
A: Thanks. I'll only open the floor for questions once the audience has calmed down a little. If I get anything technical, I'll hand it straight over to you.

OpenAI boss 'inspired' by talks with world leaders about solutions to AI risk

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he was encouraged by the desire of some world leaders to control any possible risks caused by the artificial intelligence technology his company and others are developing. Altman visited Tel Aviv, a tech powerhouse, as part of a world tour. The aim of Altman's tour is to promote his company, the maker of ChatGPT ー the popular AI chatbot ー which has caused a frenzy around the globe.

The world tour comes after hundreds of scientists and tech industry leaders, including Microsoft and Google, issued a warning about the dangers that artificial intelligence poses to humankind. Worries about artificial intelligence systems outsmarting humans have intensified with the rise of a new generation of highly capable AI chatbots. Countries around the world are scrambling to come up with rules for the developing technology.

In a talk at Tel Aviv University, Altman said it would be a mistake to create heavy rules for AI development. But he suggested the formation of a global organization that could create rules to help approve model products and test and check their safety.

UAE announces 2nd space mission, looking for clues on how life began

The United Arab Emirates unveiled plans to send a spacecraft to the solar system's main asteroid belt. It's the latest space project by the country after the successful launch of the Hope spacecraft to Mars in 2020. The endeavor is a significant milestone for the UAE Space Agency, established in 2014.

The journey of the spacecraft would span a distance over ten times greater than Hope's Mars mission. The project aims to develop the spacecraft in the coming years and then launch it in 2028 to study various asteroids. The goal of this new project is to reach the seventh, rare "red" asteroid that may hold information on how life on Earth began.

The spacecraft is named MBR after Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid AI Maktoum. It will first make its way toward Venus. It will eventually fly as close as 150 kilometers away from the group of asteroids. The spacecraft is expected to reach the seventh and last asteroid named Justitia by October 2034. Scientists believe that Justitia potentially has a surface full of organic substances.

Waymo, Uber forget past argruments over self-driving car technology to work on robotaxis in Phoenix

Self-driving car pioneer Waymo is teaming up with ride-hailing leader Uber in the Phoenix area to carry passengers and deliver food in robotic cars. In the past, driverless car technology caused a legal battle between the two companies, in which Waymo accused Uber of stealing the technology. The case culminated in Uber agreeing to pay $245 million.

As the two companies team up, Uber, whose business still depends on human drivers, will be able to send Waymo's driverless vehicles to pick up passengers and deliver food. The addition of Waymo's robotaxis to Uber's services is expected to help further increase the number of customers of the ride-hailing company.

On the other hand, the partnership will help Waymo expand its robotaxi services. Supporting Uber's services works to the advantage of Waymo since the company will have more opportunities to introduce its driverless vehicles to a wider range of Phoenix residents. However, Waymo did not announce how many of its robotic cars will be used to pick up Uber passengers and deliver food.
