Solar Power and Renewable Energy

Solar power and renewable energy have become increasingly important in our world today. Solar power harnesses the energy from the sun to generate electricity, making it a clean and sustainable source of energy. It is exciting to see more and more solar panels being installed on rooftops and in large solar farms.

Renewable energy, including solar power, plays a significant role in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and combating climate change. By utilizing solar power, we can decrease harmful greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a healthier environment for the future generations.

As technology continues to advance, solar power is becoming more accessible and cost-effective for individuals and businesses alike. It is inspiring to witness the growth of the renewable energy sector and the positive impact it is having on our planet.

Rising fuel prices linked to the Iran war are pushing more people in Asia to buy rooftop solar systems. In the Philippines, where the country faces a national energy emergency, a survey of 20 solar companies showed a 70% rise in weekly installations after the conflict began. Customer inquiries also increased six times. Brenda Valerio of New Energy Nexus said many families now want solar power quickly because they hope to lower electricity costs and avoid future price increases.

Virtual reality helps elderly people connect to others

In a retirement community called The Terraces in Los Gatos, California, older residents are finding new ways to explore the world. A caregiver helps residents put on virtual reality (VR) headsets, allowing them to visit faraway places without leaving their chairs. Many residents are in their 80s and 90s and cannot travel anymore, but the technology gives them new experiences.
During VR sessions, residents don the headsets and experience swimming with dolphins, flying over mountains, or visiting cities in Europe. The programs are carefully curated /'kjƱreɪt/  by a company called Rendever. The company says the technology acts as a catalyst /'kætəlɪst/  for better memory and social connection. Some residents even visit their childhood neighborhoods, which brings back strong memories and emotions.

Some older Americans spend money to make homes safer

According to a survey, many Americans over the age of 50 prefer to stay in their own homes. Most of them got their homes on a loan that's easy to pay. But because of this, many older adults are choosing to stay in their old homes rather than move to a different one since there aren't many available houses.

Consumers are fighting price increases

Inflation has changed the shopping habits of Americans, and those changes are helping reduce inflation.
People are fed up with prices still being 19% higher than before the pandemic.
As a result, people avoid expensive brands, shop at discount stores, buy fewer luxury items, and choose used cars rather than new ones.

When high inflation continues, consumers often develop this mindset: buy things quickly before prices go up more, which can keep inflation going. However, that's not how consumers reacted recently. Consumer Stuart Dryden has saved money by moving to a cheaper apartment and buying store-brand items. He said that they cost less but have the same quality as popular brands.

This growing consumer pushback has led big food companies to slow down their price increases recently. These smaller food price increases are expected to help lessen inflation, which has decreased sharply from 9.1% in 2022 to 3.1%. Samuel Rines, a financial expert, says that people don't want to take higher prices anymore. And many big companies noticed this. For example, PepsiCo decided to focus on gaining more sales rather than increasing prices starting this year.

About one in six American teens, aged 13 to 17, said that they use YouTube and TikTok "almost constantly."
YouTube is still the most popular site among teens, with 71% saying that they use it at least daily. TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram are also part of the list of popular sites. This information comes from a survey by the Pew Research Institute.

Three of those four sites showed a drop in usage over the past year. The survey also reports that Facebook's total teen usage has dropped from 71% to 33% in 2023. And only 3% use it almost constantly. According to the survey, teen usage of social media hasn't decreased much. However, there are concerns about the negative impact of social media on their mental health.

More and more social media sites are being criticized for using techniques that draw in and retain younger users. In October, 33 states complained about Meta for adding to the youth mental health crisis. The states said that the company designed sites, such as Facebook and Instagram, to make younger users addicted to them. But Meta has denied the claims.

Seniors in my country often show their support by forming senior groups or clubs where they can socialize, share experiences, and help each other with various needs.
various adj)さまざまの・多数の

Every week, a group of New Hampshire seniors gather to eat and talk with each other. This is part of social programs that help elderly people keep their mind and body healthy. The government gives money to restaurants to provide several nutritious food options to seniors. In addition, these restaurants become a place for senior citizens to have meaningful conversations. All these activities help the elderly restaurant visitors feel less lonely.

”Isolation is the new pandemic." said Jon Eriquezzo, president of Meals on Wheels of Hillsborough County. He delivers meals to senior centers and seniors who cannot leave their homes. He said giving them food to eat is nice. But he thinks it's even better for seniors to eat with other people and receive mutual support.

From a nutrition standpoint, "we eat better in groups," said Jean Lloyd, a nutrition consultant. She thinks eating in groups is especially good for seniors because they are vulnerable and they usually feel lonely. Studies show that widespread loneliness in the U.S. is as deadly as smoking 15 cigarettes daily. The social programs hope to reduce hunger, but more importantly, promote social interaction among the elderly.

More travelers enjoy glamping, despite high costs

Camping is one of the cheapest ways to travel. A new kind of camping, called glamping, is becoming popular. Glamping combines luxury and nature. The tents are designed with very soft pillows. Some tents even have their own bathrooms with warm running water. The campsite has fast Wi-Fi. However, the combination of hotel comfort and outdoor glamor is more expensive than high-end hotels. It's very different from what traditional campers spend.

According to a survey, US national park visitors spent $351(about \49,000) on hotels per day in 2021. On the other hand, campers just spent $149(more or less \21,000). However, glamping could cost more. For example, glamping at Utah's Zion National Park could cost up to $650(around \90,800) per night. The resort fee gives visitors a tent with beds, bathrooms, hot showers, and stoves. The accommodations also offer visitors fun activities such as live music and yoga classes.

Despite its high cost, glamping's amenities seem to attract noncampers. For instance, an estimated 10.5 million families went glamping in 2022. About 63% of people surveyed said they enjoy the outdoor experience without having to go camping.

The US has tons of excess food. Upcycling turns would-be trash into ice cream

Tyler Malek is the head ice cream maker at a restaurant named Salt & Straw Ice Cream in Portland, Oregon. In this ice cream shop, one chef's trash is another chef's cold treat. The shop uses different leftover ingredients to create different flavors. For example, leftover whey turns into lemon curd ice cream. And for the chocolate barley milk flavor, Malek uses leftover rice and grains to give it a mild, creamy flavor. Malek hopes that people will stop calling leftover ingredients "food waste" and call them "wasted food" instead.

Salt & Straw Ice Cream is one of the pioneers of the upcycling concept, which involves turning food waste into high-quality items. Chips and cake mixes made from upcycled food are becoming popular in stores. The ingredients include completely edible fruits and vegetables from farms. But they are often rejected by restaurants and supermarkets because of their appearance.

Chocolate Barley

The Upcycled Food Association awards an official "Upcycling Certified" seal to qualified products. These seals inform customers that the company producing the meal used upcycled ingredients. In 2021, the association verified about 30 products. Currently, 450 products are carrying the seal.

OpenAI boss 'inspired' by talks with world leaders about solutions to AI risk

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he was encouraged by the desire of some world leaders to control any possible risks caused by the artificial intelligence technology his company and others are developing. Altman visited Tel Aviv, a tech powerhouse, as part of a world tour. The aim of Altman's tour is to promote his company, the maker of ChatGPT ー the popular AI chatbot ー which has caused a frenzy around the globe.

The world tour comes after hundreds of scientists and tech industry leaders, including Microsoft and Google, issued a warning about the dangers that artificial intelligence poses to humankind. Worries about artificial intelligence systems outsmarting humans have intensified with the rise of a new generation of highly capable AI chatbots. Countries around the world are scrambling to come up with rules for the developing technology.

In a talk at Tel Aviv University, Altman said it would be a mistake to create heavy rules for AI development. But he suggested the formation of a global organization that could create rules to help approve model products and test and check their safety.

UAE announces 2nd space mission, looking for clues on how life began

The United Arab Emirates unveiled plans to send a spacecraft to the solar system's main asteroid belt. It's the latest space project by the country after the successful launch of the Hope spacecraft to Mars in 2020. The endeavor is a significant milestone for the UAE Space Agency, established in 2014.

The journey of the spacecraft would span a distance over ten times greater than Hope's Mars mission. The project aims to develop the spacecraft in the coming years and then launch it in 2028 to study various asteroids. The goal of this new project is to reach the seventh, rare "red" asteroid that may hold information on how life on Earth began.

The spacecraft is named MBR after Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid AI Maktoum. It will first make its way toward Venus. It will eventually fly as close as 150 kilometers away from the group of asteroids. The spacecraft is expected to reach the seventh and last asteroid named Justitia by October 2034. Scientists believe that Justitia potentially has a surface full of organic substances.
