Itochu employee gets 3 years in prison in China for endangering national security

BEIJING- A male employee of major Japanese trading house Itochu Corp, who was detained in China in 2018 on suspicion of endangering national security, has been sentenced to three years in prison in the country, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Tuesday.

A court in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou handed down the sentence to the employee on Oct 15, according to a source close to Sino-Japanese ties.

It was not immediately known what he had done in China to be convicted of endangering the country's national security.

Motegi confirmed a news report on the worker's sentencing while speaking to reporters in Tokyo.

The Japanese man, who is in his 40s, was detained during a visit to Guangzhou in February 2018.

Since 2015, at least nine Japanese have been indicted in China for alleged involvement in spying activities. With the sentencing of the Itochu worker, all nine have had verdicts rendered against them.

Companies and tourists should stop going to China if this farce for a justice system continues to abuse its authority.

The Chinese government won't be able to use foreigners in the media as a scapegoat to rile up nationalism in the people at a time when places like Hong Kong or Taiwan and minority groups like the Uyghurs are all calling for "Revoluton"!

The problem is that due to the lack of transparency of the Chinese legal system, along with the fact that the Chinese government rules over 1.3 billion people who have had no say in the matter, and combined with a lack of a free press that is allowed to operate without government approval and interference, no information to ever come from the Chinese government or media can ever be trusted.

Maybe he was a spy. Or maybe he said something bad about Mao. Or mabe a CPP member on the street bumped into him, then took offense to his existence and decided he needed to be taken care of. Or maybe any of an infinite number of other possible reasons. All we really know is that the Chinese government has destroyed its own credibility through their oppression of the people's freedoms. So whatever story they tell us is simply whatever they decided they wanted to tell us. They have no obligation to be truthful, and going on their reputation, we've seen time and time again where they've been found to be untruthful.

Trekking

BEFORE YOU GO
PLANNING
Nepal offers plenty of opportunity for walks lasting a day or less, though most are considerably longer. From Pokhara or around the Kathmandu Valley you can do a variety of two-, three- or four-day walks, but Nepal's main treks take at least a week. For the very popular Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit treks you have to allow three weeks each. Don't take on one of these treks too lightly; the end of the first week is not the time to discover that you're not that keen on walking.

Onion emergency in Bangladesh

Onions are very important in Bangladeshi cuisine. The vegetable is a staple in the country's cooking. However, many people are finding it difficult to buy onions. There is a shortage of them, which means prices have rocketed. Many Bangladeshis simply cannot afford to buy onions. Bangladesh traditionally imports onions from its neighbor India. Recent heavy monsoon rains in India damaged a lot of India's onion harvest. This has made India ban exports to Bangladesh.
The price of one kilogram of onions in Bangladeshi markets has risen from US36 cents to around $3.25. This is nearly a ten-fold increase. Bangladesh's opposition party has called for nationwide protests over the record prices.

Bangladeshi Biryani

The onion crisis is so serious that even the Prime Minister has stopped using it in her cooking. Sheikh Hasina Wazed said she is using onion alternatives in her dishes. A limited number of onions are on sale in several Dhaka markets at twice their usual price. Hundreds of people queue for hours to buy just one kilo. A 41-year-old English teacher said: "Even if I have to stand another two hours, I will do that. I can save some money. I have never seen onion prices this high. "Dhaka resident said  a lot of people in her neighborhood have stopped eating onions. She said:"It has been 15 days since I bought one kilo of onion." Many street-food sellers can no longer make their onion-based snacks.

Images of the flood St. Mark's Basilica in Venice have shocked many across the world this week. Japanese students leaving HK amid continued unrest

Japanese students studying at a Hong Kong university where violent clashes took place have begun to return home amid continuing unrest caused by protests.

Clashes between citizens and police have been escalating since a student died last Friday while allegedly taking part in a pro-democracy protest.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong has canceled all classes with two weeks still remaining in the term following fierce clashes between students and police. They exchanged fire bombs and tear gas on campus.

Nineteen-year-old Ichika Kita Tokyo's Sophia University has been studying Chinese at the university since August.

She cut short her plan to stay until mid-December and left the university on Thursday night.

Kita said she hastily gathered her belongings to evacuate after abruptly being told the dormitory would be shut down.

Kita said the campus turned into a battlefield and students were helping the injured.

According to Kita, many students were saying the police may soon raid the university. She said many barricades had been set up and they were preparing to fight until the end.

Kita said she was very worried about what will happen to her friends and fellow students after all the foreign students are gone.

About 50 Japanese students were studying are the university, but most have returned to Japan in the past few days or left the campus.

The Japanese consulate general in Hong Kong is providing buses and other means to help them evacuate.

The Berlin Wall fell 30 years ago. But an invisible barrier still divides Germany

CNN- The Berlin Wall was torn down 30 years ago. The seismic event sent shock waves across Europe, and sparked hopes for millions of East Germans.

Jubilant crowds stormed the concrete blockade dividing the East and the West on November 9, 1989, just minutes after the Communist German Democratic Republic (GDR) announced that travel restrictions would be lifted for East Germans. The propaganda and fear were replaced with a sense of freedom and unity.
West Berliners crowded in front of the Berlin Wall on November 11 1989, watching East German border guards demolishing a section of the barrier.
But three decades later, an invisible barrier still stretches across Germany. It is slowly disintegrating, but it's still there.

The two countries, The GDR and the western Federal Republic of Germany (FDR), reunited less than a year after the Berlin Wall collapsed. According to Steffen Mau, a sociology professor at Berlin's Humboldt University, many gaps, particularly the economic ones, have narrowed.

Australian State Uses High-Tech Cameras to Catch Distracted Drivers

New South Wales in Australia plans to roll out AI cameras that can catch drivers who use mobile phones inside vehicles.

According to Andrew Constance, the state's minister for Transport and Roads, the new scheme is meant to keep drivers from getting distracted by their phones. Records show that in recent years, accidents involving drivers using mobile phones have been increasing.

To lesson these accidents, authorities have decided to use advanced AI-powered cameras to keep track of drivers. The devices use AI to exclude drivers who are not using phones and other gadgets. Drivers may still use phones inside vehicles, but only through phone cradles or via Bluetooth connection. They are also allowed to pass a phone to another passenger or use it in drive-through services.

If a driver is using a phone or another device illegally, the AI cameras will take photos of the vehicle's registration plate, as well as the driver's hands. Authorities will verify the photos, and drivers found guilty will be sent a letter and fined at least $233.

The official release of the cameras comes after a successful six-month trial run. Some of the cameras will be fixed on the road, while portable ones will be moved around within the area. Drivers will not know if they are near any of the special cameras.

Despite the intentions of the new scheme, it was criticized by an Australian roadside assistance organization. The group wants the government to set up warning signs whenever drivers approach the special cameras. Constance argued, however, that the cameras have to be hidden so that drivers will be responsible whether or not they are being watched.

High-definition cameras, which will be rolled out by December, use artificial intelligence to spot drivers.

Do you think using cameras is a reliable method to catch distracted drivers?
Do you think New South Wales' new scheme is too strict?
Would you feel safer knowing that AI is being used by authorities in law enforcement(e.g.the police)?
Do you think humans can already completely rely on AI in law enforcement(e.g.advanced cameras)?

Tokyo 2020 marathon move decision 'final', says IOC's Coates

TOKYO- The decision to move the Tokyo 2020 marathon and race-waking events to northern Japan is "final", the International Olympic Committee's John Coates said Friday despite opposition from local officials.

Coates, chairman of the IOC's Coordination Commission, said the decision was made after the world championships in Doha, which saw dozens of athletes receive medical attention in hot and humid conditions.

"The IOC was shocked by what we saw in Doha in very similar conditions in terms of temperature and humidity to what's expected here in Tokyo," he said, adding that the IOC had the "health and welfare of the athletes" in mind.

Coates met Friday with Tokyo's Gov Yuriko Koike, who earlier in the day said she was opposed to the plan to move the events to the city of Sapporo and described it as a "bolt from the blue".

Coates said he recognized the "great disappointment" of people in Tokyo, but said the decision was final, even if city officials insist they still want to host the events.

"It's not a matter of if the Tokyo government insists, the decision has been taken," said Coates, answering "no" which asked if there was any chance the events could still be staged in Tokyo.

Worries about Tokyo's notoriously hot and humid summer weather have dogged preparations for the Games, which the organizers investing significantly in measures including a special heat-mitigating coating on the roads earmarked for the marathon.

Coates said other options that have been mooted, including starting the events as early as 3:00 am, were impractical because of transportation issues and the difficulty of filming in the dark.

He said the IOC would propose holding the medal ceremonies for the events in Tokyo, as well as a parade through the city's streets featuring athletes.

There would also be discussions about the economic losses incurred as a result of the decision, he added.

Koike repeated that she had been "very surprised" by the decision.

"Unfortunately we haven't been given a reason that's convincing to everyone, "she told reporters.

The IOC announced earlier this month it wanted to move the marathons and race-walking events north, a proposal apparently made without consulting either Tokyo or Sapporo officials.

Earlier Friday, Koike told Japan's Fuji TV she "didn't agree with (moving events to) Sapporo" and said the local government was still considering counter-proposals.

"There are voices among Tokyo residents who want explanations as to why this situation is occurring, and if a word from on high simply decides everything," she said.
